We start with the birding paradise of Bharatpur.
Keoladeo Ghana National Park at Bharatpur in Rajasthan was declared a World Heritage Site in 1985. It is one of the most outstanding wetland reserves in Asia. During the winters, as monsoons refill the shallow marshes, it attracts thousands of waterfowl, herons, storks, cranes and waders. Seen flying across the clear skies they make an incredible sight. Spotting scores of them together dotting the marshes is also an unforgettable visual treat. The compactness of the area makes it possible to see over a hundred species in a stay of just a few days. At Bharatpur, we will arrange a private cycle rickshaw guide for you to explore the park in a unique way.
The dilapidated Bharatpur Fort, Gopal Bhavan Palace and Mughal Rajput style gardens at Deeg (37 km away) may be worth a visit for those interested in historical sights.
A trip to India seems incomplete without a visit to the most iconic manmade structure in the world, the Taj Mahal. Built by Shah Jahan as the symbol for undying love for his wife Mumtaz Mahal, the sight of the white marble structure does take your breath away. We also take you to Fatehpur Sikri, the new imperial capital built in the name of Sufi saint Salim Chishti who had given the childless Emperor Akbar the blessing to have sons. An architectural and creative marvel, this structure still inspires awe.
From this manmade extravaganza we whisk you away to River Chambal, one of the country's most beautiful and least polluted river systems. The National Chambal Sanctuary was formed to protect this pristine river ecosystem. The river currently boasts of over 290 species of resident and migratory bird species including large nesting colonies of the rare Indian Skimmer, as well as Marsh & Fish-eating Crocodiles, eight species of Turtles and highly endangered Gangetic River Dolphins. Best explored on boats, you will be impressed by the calm and serene beauty and the numerous sightings this river has to offer.
Chambal Safari Lodge, a delightfully quaint eco-lodge run by the local noble family is where we will be staying for the night.
From Chambal, we board a train for a pleasant overnight journey that takes us to the last but nevertheless equally thrilling destination of Bandhavgarh. A great National Park to sight the revered but endangered Tigers among other mammals and birds. A beautiful drive from Katni station with lovely views of rural Madhya Pradesh, you get to see a glimpse of typical central Indian flora, vistas, architecture and way of living. It is a perfect start to the adventure ahead.
Serenity will seep into you as you check into Monsoon Forest, a unique eco-lodge with luxury tents and cottages and indigenous central Indian mud house styled architecture. With beautiful grasslands, views of the forest and the Bandhavgarh Fort in the distance, it's an ideal base to explore the magic of tiger spotting. Be prepared to have a fabulous stay as they go out of their way to make your stay most memorable. Special romantic dinners and traditional massages are worth indulging at this resort.
Bandhavgarh is uniquely famous as a forest offering best tiger sightings. The density of the tiger population at Bandhavgarh is one of the highest known in India. It offers more than 22 species of mammals and 250 species of birds. You can see the Leopard, Spotted Deer, Sambar, Barking Deer, Blue Bull, Indian Gazelle, Hyena, Jackal, Wild boar, Sloth Bear, Common Langurs, Rhesus Monkey etc.
For those interested, a local village-visit or a trip with our trained local guides to the ancient temple ruins at the 2000-year-old Bandhavgarh fort is also a great option. After fantastic sightings over the three nights at Bandhavgarh, we take the flight back to Delhi where our tour ends.
