Description
This is an unbelievably exciting tour that takes you to two of the most amazing and offbeat wildlife destinations. Kaziranga National Park situated in the north-eastern state of Assam and Sunderbans National Park near the Bay of Bengal Delta in West Bengal.
The tour begins with you being flown to Guwahati from where Kaziranga National Park is only 4½-hour drive away. Staying for three nights, you can truly immerse yourself in the exceptional wildlife-viewing opportunities on offer during this tour.
Kaziranga in the language of the Karbi tribe means 'where the mountain goat has water'. It was an inaccessible swampy land covered with tall elephant grass and bheels (water bodies). Declared a national park, it is now spread over 480 sq km with the great Brahmaputra River as it northern boundary and the Karbi Hills fringing the southern. Kaziranga National Park is famous for its 1,000-strong population of Indian One-horned Rhinoceros, wild Water Buffalo and wild Elephants. It also supports localized and endangered grassland species such as Swamp Partridge, Bengal Florican, Greater Adjutant Stork, Pallas's and Grey-headed Fishing Eagle and Spot-billed Pelican.
Kaziranga is divided into three ranges. The popular central range is the best to spot Rhinos, Water Buffaloes and Elephants playing in the water. The eastern range offers some of the most exciting and varied wildlife watching. It is in this less-visited region of the park that we have the best chance of spotting the elusive Tiger or Sun Bear. Turtles and Otters are frequently seen on the river here. At Sohola bheel we should be able to see Greater Adjutant Stork, Pallas's and Grey-headed Fishing Eagle and a great variety of waterfowl.
After exciting wildlife viewing and nature watch in the park during the day, in the evenings we will try our best to arrange an enjoyable presentation of a traditional tribal or most popular Bihu folk dance. Sitting for dinner by the log fire under the bamboo grove, it will almost seem magical.
We will also take you to an Assamese tribal village visit for a glimpse into their unique culture. You will get a firsthand experience of their popular specialized occupation-silk worm rearing.
Leaving behind the magic of Kaziranga, we fly you to Kolkata, a city with a lot of culture, character and history. Enjoy the sights and sounds of the quaint 'City of Joy' overnight as the next morning we travel to the almost mythical Sunderbans National Park.
From the jetty at Sonakhali, a 2½-hour drive takes through the lush-green rural Bengal landscape, dotted with its picturesque villages and quaint markets to the Bay of Bengal delta. We take you on a cruise down the rivers Hogol, Gomor, Durgaduani, Bidya and the Gumdi. As you sip tea or coffee, our resident naturalist explains the many mysteries of the Sunderbans. On this stretch alone you can see six different types of Kingfishers. A couple of pleasant hours later you arrive at the Sunderbans Jungle Camp on the Island of Bali. Here a sumptuous lunch awaits you and after a short rest in the comfortable cottages we take you down to Sajnekhali, to see the Mangrove Interpretation Centre and return via the Sudhyanakhali watchtower.
The following day, we will take you on a full day cruise. We leave just after breakfast and head towards the canopied walk at Dobanki. We then proceed to the furthest point-Netidhopani, where you can see age-old excavations and view game from the watchtower. If you are lucky you can spot the famous swimming tigers of Sunderbans. We keep a sharp eye out for basking Estuarine Crocodiles and the elusive Irrawady Dolphins. Enjoy lunch on board as we return late in the evening after watching the spectacular sunset. In the evening the local village troupe enacts the famous traditional Bengali opera based on the popular myth of the Goddess Bonobibi.
On the last day we take you on a tour of the island village of Bali, where you can watch local residents conducting their everyday chores like fishing, weaving and boat making. A short cruise in country boats along the narrow canals completes the unforgettable Sunderbans experience. After lunch you will set on your way back to Kolkata where the tour ends.
