The quaint tiny Himalayan country of Nepal is the only Hindu country in the world and has the unique distinction of having the only triangular flag in the world too. The uniqueness doesn't just end there, home to the Mt Everest, this country boasts of stunning natural beauty with an enviable wildlife and cultural experiences making it a very attractive destination for tourists with varied interests. It contains the highest mountains in the world, thundering rivers, magical forests and dense lowland jungles.
The bustling capital city, Kathmandu combines modern and medieval and is dotted with fascinatingly beautiful pagoda-style Hindu temples, Buddhist Stupas and elaborate royal palaces. The Kathmandu Valley once the bed of a large and ancient lake is now a colourful mosaic of rice paddies and quaint farm houses surrounded by high-forested hills.
Starting the tour at Kathmandu, we visit the old area with its stone-paved lanes, ancient temples and the colourful bazaars with curio shops and shops selling shawls, carpet, trekking equipment. Thammel, known as the hang out for backpacking foreign tourists has nice pubs and places to eat too. Strolling through these areas one can feel the pulse of this quaint bustling town.
Nepal is also a religious and spiritual hub. Blessed by the living Goddess Kumari, travellers to Nepal can have the opportunity to get blessed by Her at the Temple of the Living Goddess – Kumari.
Other tourist attractions include Swayambhunath Stupa which is a 2500 years old Buddhist Stupa located at a top of a green hillock with the eyes of Buddha painted on its pinnacle overlooking righteous behaviour of the valley inhabitants. The old Durbar Square consisting of the old palace and innumerable temples of different architecture styles is also an area worth visiting.
One cannot leave Kathmandu without an authentic Nepali dinner with cultural show at one the many restaurants in the city. Even the stay at Hotel Dwarikas is an authentic experience of Nepal's ancient cultural heritage as it blends the rich tradition of Nepali hospitality and some of the country's most exquisite architectural traditions.
Enjoy a day trip to the Royal city of Bhaktapur, known as 'Nepal's Cultural Gem'. Lying along the ancient trade route between India and Tibet, Bhaktapur is surrounded by mountains and provides a magnificent view of the Himalayas. It is filled with monuments, palaces and temples with elaborate carvings, gilded roofs and open courtyards. The city is dotted with pagodas and religious shrines.
Away from the hustle bustle of city, we drive to the Chitwan National Park next. A six-hour drive through mountain roads, tiny villages, hamlets and naturally scenic vistas make the drive very interesting. Driving along the Trisuli and Narayani Rivers, we may catch roadside views of Brown Dipper and Himalayan Pied Kingfisher.
The Royal Chitwan National Park is a World Heritage Site that protects 932 square kilometres of dry deciduous forest, tropical evergreen forest and riverine grasslands. A larger number of bird species (over 480) has been recorded here than in any other part of Nepal due to Chitwan's diverse habitats and tropical lowland situation. We can expect to see a third of these during our two-night stay. The park holds a similar wealth of mammals, including the endangered Indian Rhinoceros, Wild Boar, Sambar, Muntjac, Spotted and Hog Deer, and Rhesus and Common Langur Monkeys. Tigers, Leopards, Sloth Bears, and Gaur (the Asiatic bison) may also occasionally be seen, as well as the Marsh Mugger and fish-eating Gharial Crocodiles. We will explore the park on foot, on elephant back, in canoes and by jeep.
At Chitwan, we can also spend time indulging in various other activities including village walks, cultural programs and the most popular visit to elephant breeding centre. We can arrange for you visit Tharu villages and have a glimpse of Tharu culture too.
Pokhara is a popular hill station of Nepal, which we shall explore next. The sightseeing tour in Pokhara city covers Fewa Lake, Gupteswar Cave, David's Falls, Seti Gorge, Bindhyabasini Temple and the old city. We leave the evening at leisure for you to enjoy the views, get a feel of this lovely town and indulge in tasting Nepalese cuisine in the many eateries around. Pokhara is an ideal place to trek through oak forests, rhododendrons and over high ridges. Pheasants, Tits, Minivets, Warblers, Sunbirds, Rosefinches and Laughing-Thrushes will be among the special Himalayan bird life we may encounter as we walk.
Before driving back to Kathmandu, you could go for an early morning hike up to Peace Stupa in Pokhara, from where you can see a beautiful view of Fewa Lake and the entire Pokhara valley.
