This tour begins with a beautiful long drive from Delhi to Simla via Chandigarh. Crossing fields of yellow mustard and sugarcane, small villages, bustling towns of Haryana, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh, you get a glimpse of the diversity India has to offer. Be it natural vistas, architecture, costumes or culture, it is a quick view of the everyday life of India's common man sitting in the comfort of your car. Chat with your knowledgeable driver and find out interesting insights into your observations. Before you know it, you'll already be climbing up the picturesque winding mountainous road and reaching Simla, the summer capital of British India and the current capital of the state of Himachal Pradesh.
You will be taken to the colonial Woodville Palace Hotel, which will be your stately base to explore Simla.
The picturesque Woodville Palace estate has an impressive history. Belonging to the British, built in 1866, it was acquired by Maharaja of Gondal as a gift for his daughter. Even today the palace retains its old world charm and is one of the classiest places to stay in Simla.
Soak in the serenity at the picturesque estate or you can begin to explore Simla town in the evening. Visit the main touristy pedestrianized street, called the Mall. It retains its colonial aura with its grand old buildings like iconic Christ Church, Telegraph building, Gorton Castle etc, which you can marvel at on foot or as you ride on a horse along its stretch. It also has many shops, restaurants, clubs and bars. Some other interesting places to visit are stately colonial building of the Indian Institute of Advanced Studies, the highest hill called Jakhu Hill and Shimla State Museum. Do stop by the Lakkad Bazaar for picking up quaint wooden handicrafts.
The next day we will take you for a ride on a UNESCO World Heritage Listed Toy Train, to Barog. The tiny narrow gauge train, puffing its way through as many as 102 tunnels, winding tracks overlooking unspoilt vistas, gushing waterfalls and old world bridges makes it a fascinating experience. We also take you to visit Chail Palace, belonging to the Maharaja of Patiala. Converted into a hotel now, it still retains its charm and is a lovely place to soak in fabulous views and warm sunshine.
Our next destination is Shoja, a stunning 5-hour drive away from Simla via Narkanda and Jalori Pass. Jalori Pass (at 10,280 feet) is one of the highest passable points in the Himalayas. It is also famous for an ancient Mahakali temple, which attracts thousands of devotees from the nearby villages. Gorgeous forests, mountain streams and waterfalls dot the lovely drive with amazing views of the Himalayas constantly keeping you company.
We spend two nights at the picturesque mountain hamlet of Shoja. Situated in the Seraj Valley, it is altitudinally high and has perfect weather for tourism in all seasons. Its beauty changes from a sunny green conifer valley, full of flowers in the summer to mist covered snow-peaked cold Himalayan village in the winters. With outstanding pristine natural beauty and stunning views, it is gradually growing into one of the main tourist centers in the state and yet retains its offbeat charm. The numerous walks and treks in the surrounding forests and meadows are a special feature of the area. During spring the slopes get covered with purple iris flowers and wild strawberries grow all along the road. It is one of the most beautiful and unforgettable sights that will haunt you for a long time. Drive around Inner Seraj lying idyllically between the banks of Beas and Sutlej Rivers. We also recommend a visit to the 'The Raghupur Fort' and 'Dough Thatch', a lovely grassy meadow very close to Shoja.
The next day, we enjoy another beautiful drive, from Shoja to Goshaini. Crossing orchards of plums, apples and various fruits, you can see little kids selling these freshly plucked fruits along the roads. The road soon becomes narrow and you get the feeling of heading towards the back of beyond. Leaving behind bustling villages, you enter the quaint sleepy town of Goshaini.
Goshaini is a scenic and idyllic Himachali village. Our stay is one of the main attractions of this off the beaten track place. A delightful homestay on the banks of the Tirthan River, this quaint wooden lodge can be reached by sitting in a hand pulled pulley cart over the gushing river! The setting is picture perfect amidst apple orchards and high mountains and a river full of trout. Right on the riverbank, this place is ideal for relaxing on the hammocks, trout fishing, sharing stories around the fireplace or going for long walks accompanied by the owner's lovable dogs. Treks or picnics in the surrounding countryside adjoining the Great Himalayan National Park.
Overnight stay and all meals are at the Guesthouse run by a lovely Himachali family. The guesthouse owner's wife is probably one of the best Himachali cooks you will ever meet. From simple traditional Indian fare to some continental dishes she has picked up from guests, her warmth and love for cooking and taking care of guests is exemplary. This will be an unforgettable experience of Himachali hospitality.
The next day is also at leisure to explore Goshaini and it's surroundings. We can organize Trout fishing at Tirthan River along with a picnic lunch at Bathad or you can visit the famous Chini Bungalow near Goshaini.
Spend the last night of your trip enjoying the fresh mountain air and maybe a bonfire to ponder and relive your experience as you share stories with other like-minded guests or newly made friends.
Next morning bid farewell to the warm hosts and the mountains as you are driven to the airport near Kullu for your return flight or onward journey.
