Red Fort In Delhi
Delhi, the capital of India has been the capital of many empires over the last thousand years. Tradition says that Delhi has seven cities, but in fact at least fourteen distinct cities existed. Almost each emperor created a new city near the old city. The last time Delhi became a capital again was in 1911 when the then ruling British decided to move the capital of British India from Calcutta to Delhi, laying the foundation for the 'eight city' of Delhi, which came to be known as New Delhi.

In 1913, Edwin Lutyens, the most renowned English architect of the day, was chosen to design New Delhi. Luytens's architectural conceptions were totally different from the Hindu or Mughal architecture. When you walk through the center of New Delhi, you will find yourself in a the last imperial city that was ever built with such extravagance. The city center has wide, straight avenues in a strict layout, plenty of parks and low colonial buildings with spacious gardens.

Some 29,000 laborers and 3,500 stone carvers built the city, using no less than 700 million bricks.

At the center of new Delhi stands the 42 meter high India Gate, an archway in the middle of a crossroad. It commemorates the 90,000 Indian soldiers killed fighting for the British Army during the first World War and bears the names of more than 13,000 British and Indian soldiers killed in the Afghan war in 1919.

The shopping centre of New Delhi is Connaught Place. CP as it is called is giant circle with buildings in colonial style. The low colonial spacious buildings are now being overwhelmed by the modern high-rises.

The Red Fort was built by the Moghul emperor Shah Jahan, who transferred the capital from Agra back to Delhi. It covers of 2 square km. Opposite the Red Fort is the world's largest mosque also built by Shah Jahan, that accomodates up to 25,000 worshippers.

The Qutab Minar is the world's highest tower, was built by Quth-ud-din Aibak to proclaim the victory of Islam in North India.
